so i just finished re-reading snow crash for the second time. and i still love it.
but... why does he insist on connecting raven and hiro via their fathers? i suppose i could forgive this, really, except he does the same sort of 'our parents knew each other in some obscure way' in cryptonomicron (and diamond age, if i remember correctly).
but yea. it's still amazing.
obscure question - in the acknowledgements, he admits to having massive resources in terms of help researching stuff. has anyone read any interview in which he talks about how/why he had the opportunity for such help? was he just well connected?

Re: family / research
Wed, March 9, 2005 - 5:03 AMI think he mentions in there that his brother or some in-law or something was a Sumerian historian or something, and someone else he knew was into linguistics, etc. I don't have my copy handy to look in but I thought I remembered him saying in there... -

Just look at Cryptonomicon and Baroque cycle.

Re: family / research
Mon, April 4, 2005 - 9:30 AMstephenson wrote a long article in wired (linked to from this tribe) about laying undersea cable for the fiber-optics industry... not sure if the research into that led to the inspiration for cryptonomicon or the other way around.
