Early Works....

I've been hitting up the local library for treasures and ran across a few things. I have finally read the Big U, NS's first novel. I liked it, a good first work containing some of the seeds to his later(greater) stuff. I also discovered a couple books co-written with J. Frederick George called "Interface" and "The Cobweb". I liked Interface. It comes off a lot like a Dan Brown novel. The Cobweb read a lot like a run of the mill spy/politico novel.

Yeah, I've read all of them, and really enjoyed them. I had a difficult time getting into the Baroque Cycle books. I read Quicksilver, but haven't gotten any of the others.

I bogged down in the first third of Quicksilver....I encourage You to persevere.
My take is that Stephenson needs to create the structure and background that the entire work hangs on, so it reads like something from the 1700's. Once I wrapped my head around this, everything fell into place.

I'll have to give this another shot, I guess.

I could not force myself past the first half of Quicksilver, and eventually quit trying. This was surprising to me, given that the rest of NS's writing is so engaging, and that he continued on with two more books after this one.

I got 1,000 pages into the copy of Quicksilver I got from the library, and he still hadn't introduced all the main characters promised on the book jacket. So I gave up.

My favorite thing about Stephenson is probably the neat things he did with language, and he had to go to such lengths to explain the setting in Quicksilver that the fun of the words didn't get through for me. I doubt I'll try it again.

I liked Big U, Interface and Cobweb, though!
